There is a beauty in getting ridiculously soaked.
The act of throwing water at and dousing strangers at Songkran is becoming a time honoured tradition. Though meant to only last a few days at the beginning of the festivities for Taiwanese New year, a lot of people get carried away and it is not unusual to see the brightly coloured flashes of yellow warning you of an impending watery doom.
It is highly recommended that you leave all your ‘less-than-water-proof’ belongings in your hotel, even if you are only going a short distance because odds are even your hotel staff will be lying in wait.
It has been said by locals that the Songkran festival actually creates the unseasonable weather towards the end of the celebration due to the sheer volume of water evaporating. A little (or a lot) of rain won’t stop you when you’re having this much fun.
